Located between the cuticle and the cell wall, this is a silicon-cellulose layer that creates an extra physical barrier in the leaf. This structure increases the external density of the plant and gives it a mechanical strength. This physical barrier prevents pathogens from entering the cell, making the cell less affected by enzymatic actions that will cause diseases. Pectin and polyphenol, which are the components that make up the cell wall structure, increase the cell wall elasticity by interacting with silicylic acids.
